Sarah is a sweet, gentle and easy going little girl. I remember the first time I met her in her enclosure. She sat on the staircase quietly with the most satisfied smile. She seemed to be enjoying herself.
Sarah loves to walk with her friends, Pauline, Nattie and Jasper. I enjoy walking with her as well as she walks very well on leash and always responds when I call her name. When you call her name during the walk, she always turns her head to look at you and gives you a big smile. Her smile would melt my heart.
I have taken Sarah to a dog & human party at a dog park early this month and she behaved very well. She got along well with other dogs and new human friends. She charmed everyone with her beautiful face and gentle personality. Many people asked me who she was and told me how easy going and lovely she was. We brought some props, such as sunglasses and toy camera for photo shooting for the dogs. Sarah allowed us to place the props on her and waited patiently for her photos to be taken. She is a real dog model.
I am looking forward to having more adventures with her in the near future. Sarah is an easy dog who does not ask for much. Go meet this sweet heart at HKDR’s Tai Po Homing Center.
Polly is a very beautiful, small sized dog. It takes a little while to get to know her, but once you do, it’s so worth it!
Polly loves her walks and when you walk into her enclosure she will jump up with excitement. With a little practice, she learned that in order for me to put the leash on her and bring her out, she has to sit down. You can see her whole body shake with excitement even though she’s sitting! Haha.
During her walk Polly loves to explore her surroundings. At first I felt a little sad because she would ignore me, and when I tried to pet her she would move away and choose to sniff the grass instead. But then I realized that since she doesn’t get to go out very often, I should just let her enjoy the walk and sniff all she wants! 😉 Of course she still pays attention to the treats haha. Right now she is learning how to shake hands. Last week we were practicing and after Polly placed her paw in my hand, Walter (who was really just trying to get a treat as well) added his paw on top. It was so cute! 😛
Sometimes after walking the dogs, I stay in their enclosure to play with them for a little while. I remember the first time Polly came up to me by herself to ask me to pet her. I felt extra happy! She finally trusted me enough to let me pet her. Since that day Polly always wags her tail when I walk up to her, and she lets me pet and brush her fur with no problems.
Maybe it’s due to the fact that she takes awhile to warm up to strangers that Polly hasn’t found a home yet. But if you give her a chance you will find out she is a very sweet girl who doesn’t ask for much. Come meet this princess at our Tai Po Homing Centre!
Between the two sisters Alison and Jersey, Jersey was always known as the one who was more shy and timid. In recent months, it has been a pleasure to watch her turn from a nervous dog into one who loves to go on outings!
I remember the first time volunteer Jackie took her on an outing. Jersey was scared of the van and didn’t want to get in! Jackie had to pick her up to get her in the van. However, Jersey quickly learned that getting in the van lead to a fun adventure. On the return trip she jumped into the van all by herself, and since then we’ve never had to lift her in again! Sometimes she even jumps in too early, before we are finished laying down the newspaper! Haha.
Jersey went to Tamar Park a few months ago and impressed all of us with how calm and happy she was to be out. Even though she was in a strange place (to her) and meeting many new people, she was very friendly and happy. She kept giving everyone kisses! It made me sad that we had to bring her back to kennels at the end of the day.
This summer, Jersey will be traveling around Hong Kong with us. She was already a champ on our outing to Sharp Island. She wasn’t nervous at all and walked amongst the crowds happily, got on the boat, and walked on the beach. She wasn’t a big fan of the water, but honestly, most of our dogs are not XP On land, Jersey had the biggest, most satisified smile. She even sat for a treat, something she usually doesn’t do at kennels 😛
Please give Jersey a home! She’s a big sweetheart, just waiting for her perfect family.
Ben is seriously one of the happiest dogs I know. He always has a big smile on his face! I remember one time he had an accident and had to get some wounds treated. Even though he was bleeding, he was still wagging his tail and smiling at everyone. I have never seen him upset or angry!
Ben always greets everyone with hugs and kisses. Even if you are next to him and are petting him calmly, he will suddenly turn around to give you a quick hug and kiss just to remind you how much he loves you. And if you are far away and call his name, he will surely run into your arms!
Ben loves charging out of his enclosure to say hi to you. He is always very excited to see you! The only time he may not come greet you is if he is enjoying his food. Then, when you find him hiding in a corner with his food bowl, he will look at you with a silly sheepish smile.
His love for food is what earned him his loving nickname, “Fat Ben”, haha. He probably needs to go on a diet, as when he lies down he really looks like a pig! XP However despite his chubbiness, Ben actually loves to go hiking. He has been on many adventures with his favourite volunteers! This summer he will join the PAWsome team on a tour around Hong Kong. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with his travels! Share his photos and help find him a furever home. He will definitely bring a lot of joy to any family!
My first impression of Cinnamon was that she is a curious little girl with a unique fur colour and small in size. The first time I met her was when I went into the enclosure to visit her roommate. She came from the other side of the enclosure, stood beside the fence a few steps’ distance away from me and looked at me. I guess she was wondering who I was. When I tried to approach her, she shied away from me. After few weeks, Cinnamon stood next to the fence and looked at me as before. I tried to approach her again and I was happy that she let me pet her. Just like that our friendship was started.
Now, Cinnamon comes running whenever I call her name! 🙂
Cinnamon is actually a very playful, sweet and friendly girl. She has a lot of doggie friends and loves to walk with her best friend, Pauline. They are the perfect pair. When you bring them out from the enclosure, these two lovely girls will jump to you and give you a lot of kisses. It seems that they are welcoming you and saying thank you for the walk. They both walk very well on leash. I enjoy the time with them very much.
Cinnamon is not only a sweet and friendly doggie, but she is also a loyal dog. When I brought her to Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, Cinnamon would wait for me when I was behind. Besides, she would come back to me with her happy smile when I called her name even though she was quite far away from me. Cinnamon is also a good hiking partner. I went hiking with her and a group of volunteers during the Chinese New Year holiday. In the beginning, we were behind the group, but after a while, we were in the leading position of the group. Haha. You can imagine what a good hiker she is.
I hope Cinnamon will be lucky enough to have the chance to prove how sweet, friendly and loyal she is to her forever home. Cinnamon will be one of the hosts in our “Woof Woof Tour Around Hong Kong”, of which the first outing will take place on June 26 at Sharp Island in Sai Kung. Come join us and get to know this pretty lady!
Felix takes a little while to get to know you, but once he does he is a silly, fun, and loving boy. In the beginning, he did not want to walk with me unless his friends Walter and Polly were going out as well. He was scared of loud noises and jumped at the slightest rustle of leaves. Now, I can bring him on outings and he has a great time exploring! He is very curious about everything but is also calm, and when you call his name he comes back to you. I am excited to go on our summer adventures together!
Felix loves human attention, and when you go into his enclosure he will bow down to ask you to play. If not, he will cuddle up to you to ask for a pet. He will even stick his head under your arm and nuzzle you until you give him a hug! Felix also loves to get his fur brushed and will stand quietly beside you as you brush him. When he is extra happy, his tail will not only wag, it will swing in a full circle!
I have taken Felix to play at Penfold Park and he behaved perfectly. He interacts well with people, including kids, and other dogs. He loves rolling in the grass, and seemed very interested in the birds 😛 He also wanted to jump in the (unfortunately very dirty) pond. Hopefully he will like the beach! 😉
With his silly smile and unique fur pattern (we always joke about the “button” on the top of his head), it’s not surprising that Felix had a lot of admirers when he went to Tamar Park! Unfortunately, he still hasn’t been chosen by his future family, but I know it must be soon! Felix is a great dog full of love and adventure. Go meet him at HKDR’s Tai Po Homing Centre (6 Shek Lin Road), and follow his PAWsome Summer adventures on Facebook and Instagram!
Walter was one of the first dogs I walked at HKDR. He made a deep impression on me because the first thing he did when I walked into his enclosure was come over and lay his head on my lap. I felt so special at the time, even though it did not take long to realize that he does this to pretty much everyone hahaha. But even so, I can’t help it if my heart melts a little every time he leans into my touch 😉
Walter is a friendly dog, and he’s also very laid back. He loves his walks (rainy days excluded) but otherwise he is happiest lying down on his bed and getting belly rubs.
The faces of Walter. He looks so serious most of the time, but sometimes you catch him acting silly or with a happy smile on his face! 🙂
Beautiful posture 🙂
Something interesting is in the air
Curled up in bed
The one thing that Walter absolutely hates is the rain. Even when there’s a thunderstorm and all the dogs are soaking wet, Walter is the one who somehow stays completely dry. May So told me that one time while she was walking Walter, he suddenly began pulling her back towards kennels. She was confused, but minutes after they got back, it started pouring rain. I guess Walter is even more accurate than the weather reports! 😛
One rainy day, Walter saw me walk into his enclosure, and immediately stood up, turned around so his back was towards me, and then snuggled back into his bed! Haha! He couldn’t have been more clear that he wasn’t about to go on a walk in the rain! 😛 Luckily the rain stopped by the time I finished walking his friends, so he came over and asked me to leash him.
Walter is such an easy dog, and would be so happy just to have a warm, dry bed with some love and cuddles. He already knows how to sit, and shake hands (although if the ground is wet he will only crouch 😛 ). Go meet this sweet boy at Tai Po!
We actually have two PAWsome dogs this week, lovely seniors Leonard and Taurus. Read Jceo’s story below!
I would like to share my story with you. I always meet them in pairs so it’s hard for me to separate them into 2 articles. So here I present to you my story with the two grandpas, Leonard and Taurus, the best partners in this world.
I first met Leonard while he was still living near the front door area. Back then when I tried to approach him, he always went back to his little box and looked at me with his cool face quietly. Together with his lion look, my first impression of him was, “this is a really cool dog”. But soon after, I got a chance to walk him and he got to know me, and then I knew that I had been totally fooled by his looks. He is actually a grandpa that acts like a grandson, so active and childish sometimes.
Since Leonard and Taurus are quite old (12 years old), my friend and I decided to bring them out and hold a small birthday party for them. We prepared a little dog birthday cake for them. It was separated into 2 pieces. Leonard’s half of the cake was probably devoured within a minute. You can also tell that he’s very active for his age by other behaviors. He keeps turning and looking out different windows during the van drive, tries to catch a fly with his mouth when it flies by, keeps walking and walking until you stop for them to take a rest, runs to you when you call his name, and jumps for food.
If Leonard is a naughty, energetic grandpa, Taurus is the opposite. He is an elegant and gentle one.
I didn’t recognize Taurus’s name when I first met him. Somebody had told me to take him out on a walk together with Leonard because they are good friends. When I looked at Taurus I realized, “Oh it is you!” We actually first met during his free run. A dog just suddenly bumped into me and put his face on my thigh for a long long time. (I guess many volunteers have had the same experience). I was super surprised because I did not know him at all but he stayed next to me asking for my attention like we were good friends.
Taurus is indeed a very elegant dog. He never rushes, he takes the food gently, he keeps putting on a smiley face, he walks secretly next to you and puts his face on you, he runs slowly into your arms when you open them and call his name, and he always stays quietly next to you. When Leonard finished his piece of cake within one minute, Taurus was only having his second bite. When Leonard was moving all the time, crashing into everyone’s legs, Taurus just stayed in the same place, smiling at us. Taurus loves exploring things during the walk, but he’s more interested in us.
This pair of dogs is really closely bonded. When you leash them together and they know they are going out together, they will first play with each other to show their joy before they go out. Even if they are walked by 2 people, they tend to walk close to each other, side by side.
I guess their biggest wish for each other is to be able to enjoy a home that he can call his own. Give them a chance and I can promise that you won’t regret it!
This week’s special dog is another ALC friend, Banjo, introduced by our PAWsome team member, May So 😀
Today, I am going to introduce one of my furry friends, Banjo. I usually call him “little Banjo” because of his size and adorableness.
I remember Banjo looked sad and frightened when he arrived at Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre (ALC) because he was hurt by his human. Later, Banjo was moved to the upper floor of the centre. I didn’t have much interaction with him because he still needed more time to trust humans and adapt to the new environment. However, I did say hi to him by calling his name when I met him every Saturday as a volunteer at ALC.
On one Saturday evening, when I went to his shared room, Banjo stood up, smiled at me with his wagging tail, and asked for a pat. I was surprised as he invited me to play with him. Starting from that moment, our friendship was established.
Nowadays, I am always looking forward to meeting little Banjo when volunteering at ALC. Though I can’t meet him every Saturday, Banjo and I are always very happy to see each other. I enjoy seeing him running happily like a rabbit and love to see his happy face.
Compared to when he first arrived at the centre, Banjo has improved a lot and has become a happy little boy. He has his favourite volunteers, but he still needs more time to know strangers. With love and patience, I believe Banjo will be a fun and loyal friend. Will you give him a chance?
Last but not least, Banjo is one of our models for HKDR’s first flag day (Wednesday, July 27, 2016). Please buy the flag and meet him at Ap Lei Chu Homing Centre for his autograph! 😉
Watch the videos below to see a happy Banjo playing!
Diana, also known as Princess Diana. She is as beautiful and dignified as the real Princess Diana!
When I first met her, Diana was a shy dog who didn’t really interact with people. She loved her walks but if you tried to pet her she would shy away. Nowadays she is always ready with a wagging tail to greet people coming in to her enclosure! When you call her name she will come towards you calmly for a pet, and when you stop she will lean in closer to you to ask for more. She’s not greedy though, as after awhile she will walk away and let the other dogs get a turn too. If you call her name again, she will come right back over!
Diana likes to get her fur brushed. One time I went into her enclosure and called her name, but I looked around and couldn’t see her. Then I glanced down and it turns out she was already waiting at my feet! Haha. She is very patient and stands still while I brush her fur.
I know Diana really loves her walks because it’s almost impossible to get her attention when she has her nose in something; not even a treat! 😛 So this year during the Chinese New Year holidays, I took Diana hiking. She had such a great time!! She was so relaxed and happy, and stopped to sniff everything! I attached two leashes together to give her more room to explore, however she never pulled on the leash and instead would occasionally turn back to make sure I was still there. So if you love hiking and would like a 4-legged partner, Diana would be perfect! 😀
And guess what, Diana will be at Tamar Park next Saturday, May 21! Mark it in your calendars and be sure to come by and say hello! And if you can’t make it, you can still visit her at our Tai Po Homing Centre, any day of the week between 10am and 6pm. Will you bring this beautiful princess home?
